Jolie Mejia and her family were recently visiting a local beach when they discovered a tale of love in its purest form.
It started when they noticed a lone stray dog who approached Meja and her family after they had settled down by the sea.
“He didn’t seem abandoned. He wore a ribbon around his neck, and his fur was clean,” Mejía told The Dodo. “I pet him, waiting for his owner, but minutes passed, and no one came.”
The dog seemed to appreciate the other pets Meja was with, but his attention was always fixated on the water.
And Meja soon discovered the heartwarming explanation behind this.
Meja and her family, presuming the puppy had been abandoned, thought about taking him in themselves. So, when a local man passed by, Meja asked him whether he knew the dog’s story.
“He explained that practically everyone in the area knows the dog and is very fond of him,” Mejía said.
“He told us that the dog’s owner was a fisherman who passed away some time ago, and that the dog comes to the beach every day and stares out to sea.”
The dog appears to have been keeping watch in preparation for his friend’s untimely return.
“We were very moved,” said Mejía.
Meja thinks the dog’s owner passed away at sea around a year ago, and the dog has been keeping an eye out to the sea ever since.
Even if the dog’s owner might never show up again, the dog still has friends who care for him.
People in the neighborhood seem to be aware of the dog’s sad history since they feed, house, and take care of him whenever he is in need.
The Dodo received confirmation from a local veterinarian that the dog’s name is Vaguito and that he is currently being taken care of by a local woman.
Vaguito’s eyes were still cast out to sea as Mejia, and her family parted ways with him at the end of the day.
She won’t soon forget his sad tale, one of loyalty to a love he lost and the loyalty and affection he found in the community.
“I have a dog at home,” Mejía said. “I love dogs in general. His story really touched my heart.”
