One evening, Shannon Lorio was driving the ‘Nascar Road,’ a long stretch of road in Georgia known for drivers who have a tendency to speed down it.
Unfortunately she lost control of her vehicle and the situation turned dangerous and she was fighting for her life.
Shannon recalls the incident speaking in an interview:
“I was angry, and I was speeding. I turned onto a road that was really windy and curvy, took the first curve no problems- but when I came into the second curve, the car fishtailed. It took me out of the driver’s seat and threw me out of the back glass.”
The crash had left her unconscious, bleeding and in a lot of pain. She needed to get help, but couldn’t move.
She needed a miracle, and that’s exactly what she got in the form of a German Shepherd who was quite fittingly named Hero.
Hero came to save the day
“I don’t know how long I had been out before I came to, but I remember when I did come to, I felt this huge presence. I don’t know if he was making his rounds (the dog), I don’t know if he was headed back to his original owner. But he came across me, and I thank God that he did.” Sharon said in the interview.
Hero refused to leave Shannon’s side until he got her to safety.
“My face was bleeding, and he began to lick my face. And the next time I came to, he had me turned around and halfway out the car. He was pulling me off the back of the car.” She recounts
Hero dragged Shannon by her t-shirt all the way out of the damaged vehicle and up to the side of the road where she would be easily seen by a passerby.
Hero then managed to help Shannon stand up so she could be in the view of any passerby. Luckily she was able to flag down someone driving past who came to assist her.
She was taken straight to the hospital for treatment. It turns out she suffered from a brain haemorrhage which meant she would likely have lost her life if it wasn’t for the heroic efforts of Hero.
“This dog, he did everything, and he’s an amazing animal, he really is. If he hadn’t have saved me, I wouldn’t have been here today.”

So what happened to Hero?
Hero was taken in by the Humane Society who helped him to find a forever home with a canine search and rescue trainer called Heidy Drawdy.
