This is the story of an incredible woman who sheltered 97 homeless dogs while a category 5 storm destroyed the land around her
Back in 2019, Hurrican Dorian rages over the Bahamas leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Amid the suffering, animals are often overlooked, especially those without homes nor humans to look after them.
Chella Phillips, the one and only person behind The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas operation stepped up to provide shelter to those in need.
She packed her house with 97 stray pups of all shapes and sizes and took care of them as well as she could.
Usually, Chella would rescue dogs from the streets in order to get them vetted and vaccinated.
Once this is done, they will often live with her at her refuge until she can find a rescue willing to take them on in the US.
Thanks to her one-woman operation, many, many once-homeless dogs have left the streets of Nassau in the Bahamas and are now being care for by their loving families.
“New dogs each day, each week, each month, new mouths to feed and care. That is a reality I cannot escape anymore,” she writes.
“This is a small island, yet thousands of homeless dogs are roaming the streets in search of food, water, love.”
“They are all looking for the same, someone to love them and be kind to them. You would think that is not too much to ask, but here, it is. Not many people see these homeless dogs as sentient beings.”

Her post about the storm went viral, and since then she has been receiving donations from people all over the world!
“Everyone here gets along and welcomes the newcomers with tail wags because they know they are their brothers and sisters in suffering on the streets,” Chella wrote in an update on Facebook.
“Each of my babies deserve to have loving homes, so please, I am begging for rescues to help them!!”
“My heart is breaking that I left so many on the streets cause I had no more room to bring them. Please.. Please!!”
