So beautiful, that this bird is in fact the national bird of Nepal.
They are best known for their iridescent plumage and have become hugely popular in recent years.
Stretching around 70cm on average and weighing around 5lbs, they aren’t the smallest of birds.
The Himalayan monal is also known as the ‘nine-colored-bird’ due to the nine colors you will see on this bird.
With a white back and black underparts, the male displays a prominent white patch on its rump amid flight.
The youngsters don’t sport the vibrant plumage like the adult males.
Their diet consists of insects, seeds, berries and shoots, they will spend most of the day foraging for these items.
Their large bills have evolved to be used for digging and reaching insects.
Due to their snow-covered climate, these birds are tolerant to the cold.
They are solitary creatures unless, with a mate, this is mostly observed during the breeding season between April and August.
