A kayaker got quite the fright when a seal suddenly emerged from the water below his kayak and slapped him right in the face with an octopus.
The unbelievable footage was captured off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Kyle Mulinder said he was paddling with several others when the sassy seal appeared out of nowhere.
It really is one you have to see to believe:
Taiyo Masuda was paddling on a kayak, out on a trip with his colleagues when the freak occurrence happened
While the group were casually floating along, the seal emerges from the ocean and flings the octopus right at his colleague Kyle Mulinder.
We were just sitting out in the middle of the ocean and then this huge male seal appeared with an octopus and he was thrashing him about for ages.
According to Kyle, the seal and the octopus were having a fight before disappearing into the water again. After a short while, they came back up, and the seal whipped the octopus right into his face.
He added:
He thrashed it in mid fight and my face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I was like ‘mate, what just happened?’ It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face like ‘dum dum dum’.
However, the slap wasn’t the end of the fight, as the octopus attached itself to Kyle’s kayak, and he couldn’t get it off without the help of his fellow kayakers.
