This is the story of a nature lover who not only single-handedly rescued and rehabilitated a baby deer but also captured it all on camera.
Darius Sasnuaskas is a self-confessed outdoorsman who witnessed the birth of two baby deer in his very own backyard close to the Yellowstone National Park in the US.
While watching them, he noticed one of the newborns was injured and was unfortunately left behind by his family as she couldn’t keep up.
“With so many predators around, she had no chance to survive on her own,” Darius writes in his video caption. “I do not support keeping wild animals as pets, but this was [a] special situation,” he writes.
She wouldn’t have been able to survive on her own in the wild, especially with predators about. So Darius brought her into his home and to take care of her.
“She was very hungry and had no problem with any of my pets. [For the] first week, she slept by my bed on my shirt, and the shirt became very important to her,” Darius told The Dodo. “She had to have it to be able to sleep.”
Darius was a dedicated caregiver, he fed her every four hours, made a splint for her leg using a box of oatmeal and did his research to make sure he was raising her right.
“I had to do some Internet search and reading to be able to understand how to [raise] a fawn … get up at night to feed her every four hours, and clean her after.”
Eventually, she began to walk straight again, and her spirits started to lift. She even formed a tight relationship with Mack, one of Darius’s dogs.
Mack would help out during feeding time, he often licked her clean and generally gave her a lot of love.
“Mack was [a] big help because he just loved her and cleaned her so good.”
After a little while, she was healthy and ready to be released back into the wild, but it wasn’t so easy as the bond between her and Darius was strong.
Every time he tried to let her go, she kept coming back to him, until one evening, she was finally reunited with her family.
“She’s already used to me, and she follows me. But nobody can replace her real mom.”
